He also experiences repeat visits from the reanimated corpse of his dead wife, Laura. Shadow's personal tale and the details of American small-town life are well developed compared with the not-well-defined plot. The focus shifts from the gods' Armageddon to Shadow's life, to subplots about secondary characters. The book has wit but is too busy and not very engaging and includes some graphic language, sex, and disturbing events. George Guidall's clear, well-articulated narration contributes to a positive listening experience. Fans will no doubt enjoy the subject matter and the mythic scope. Denise A. He knew how to strike light, and disappear into the night. The term turn weakness into strength is his.* The story of the making of the David Lean movie, Lawrence of Arabia which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won 7 is told here in a beautiful fashion. Only Sam Spiegel, the producer at Columbia Pictures could have gotten this movie done. You will learn how the part was first offered to Leslie Howard, Lawrence Olivier, and then Albert Finney, until settling on newcomer Peter O'Toole.In conclusion, if you love history and the grand expanse of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things then you are going to love this book. Lawrence was Hollywood handsome with a magnetic personality and charisma to match. His influence directly led to the creation of the modern Jordan, and the UAR (United Arab Republic). This a very well writen and interesting book about a facinating man who lived and was a major player during a critical period in our history.However, there are 1-3 typos on almost every page of the book I have read so far and I'm on chapter 4. Almost all of the typos involve one, two or sometimes three words bunched together to form word-abominations such as:"himhave" "timewas" "anadventure" "discribinghis" etc.I guess these errors were introduced when the book was digitized. I also guess that the book was not proof-read after this procedure.These errors are begining to distract from my reading pleasure. A corrected version would be appreciated.

One of the best stories I've read about man's extraordinary will to live, and how this helped bring about rescue during escape as a POW. In the same league as "Into the Mouth of the Cat," (the story of, Vietnam, POW Lance Sijon and his refusal to submit to his captors demands while being held prisoner in North Vietnam's, ill-famed, Hoa Lo Prison and his subsequent heroics leading to his being awarded, posthumously, the Medal of Honor), and "Code of Honor" (Col. John Dramesi's story of his time held as a, Vietnam, POW, and of his strict adherence to the 'Code of Conduct' , and at what costs he did this). A must-read (this, and the other two books that I mentioned) for anyone who wants to know what a true hero is made of.

This book is not only a very well researched and written story of Dieter Dengler's life that covered his childhood in wartime and postwar Germany, through his early learning how to survive, on to his interesting quest to come to the USA and become a pilot, through his early disappointments in the Air Force, on the college to get an AA, and then on to acceptance and training to become a naval aviator, and his service during the Vietnam War, capture in Laos, treatment and daring escape and rescue. This book is not only brilliantly written but in great depth covers the dangers, skills, successes and sometime failure of the brave men and women who succeed in become a Naval Aviator, a skill more demanding than perhaps any other form of piloting an aircraft due to the demanding and unforgiving requirements of taking off and landing plane on an aircraft carrier in all types of weather day and night.The book very well covers the Spad pilots of the USS Ranger, the carrier LtJG Dengler flew off of and served on during his tour off Vietnam. As a retired Marine Corps officer I understand and appreciate the varying degrees of leadership and skills a military officer must serve with and under. The book shows that while there are mostly qualified and successful officers/pilots there are also some who are not that good at leading and sometimes lack in both skills and personality (I personally witnessed that a few times during my 25 years active service) and am thankfully they are few in number compared to the many selfless and dedicated officers who serve our country (same could be said about the enlisted ranks which I also had the privilege to serve among.)The book very well covers the loss of Dengler's A-1E Skyraider (Spad), his attempted evasion, capture, escape and recapture, his terrible treatment and his personal skills and determination which allowed him an opportunity to escape and evade again, until rescued by the grace of God and dedicated rescue service provided when possible.The book then covers Dengler's return to civilian life briefly and his love, loss and sad ending. It showed Dengler lived life to the fullest and bravely chose when to end it. This book is an amazing story and excellently portrays the life of a brave American. The author did a tremendous job in writing the book. There was no part in my mind that was not interesting. Also, I see where someone gave this book a one star rating because he had a paper book written in 1979 and didn't think this book could add anything. I disagree. First this book is offered electronically on Kindle which in itself is a benefit for those of us who enjoy reading off a Kindle and it is cheaper to purchase than a paperback. Secondly, this book may just offer a better written story and one more informational than the Escape from Laos book authored by Dengler. Just a thought. Whatever, I see no reason to downrate a book just because you have another book covering the story and most especially if you haven't even purchased this one.

About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is director of the Justice Research Association, a private consulting firm and think tank focusing on issues of crime and justice.  The Justice Research Association (JRA) serves the needs of the nation's civil and criminal justice planners and administrators through workshops, conferences, and grant-writing and program evaluation support.  JRA also sponsors the Criminal Justice Distance Learing Consortium (CJDLC), which resides on the Web at http://www.cjdlc.org.

    Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Norte Dame and The Ohio State University, having entered both a master's (1970) and a doctorate in Sociology (1974) with a special emphasis in criminology from The Ohio State University.  From 1976 to 1994 he taught criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.  For the last 16 of those years, he chaired the university's Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice.  In 2001 he was named Professor Emeritus at the university.

    As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university's graduate program in security administration and loss prevention.  He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade.  Schmalleger has also taught in the online graduate program of the New School for Social Research, helping to build the world's first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications.  An avid Web surfer, Schmalleger is the creator of a number of award-winning World Wide Web sites, including one that supports this textbook (http://www.cjbrief.com).

    Schmalleger is also founding editor of the journal Criminal Justice Studies.  He has served as editor for the Prentice Hall series Criminal Justice in the Twenty-First Century.

About the Author

Paul F. Cook is the Grace B. Kerr Centennial Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma. His awards and achievements twice included the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and he was the recipient of the National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award from 1983 to 1988. Professor Cook is Associate Editor of Protein and Peptide Letters and Executive Editor of Proteins and Proteomics.

W.W. Cleland is the M.J. Johnson Professor and Steenbock Professor of Chemical Science at the Enzyme Institute at University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the early 1960s, Cleland's landmark papers created a theoretical framework for the study of steady-state kinetics of multisubstrate enzymes and laid the foundation for all subsequent steady-state studies. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Biological Chemistry and of Biochemistry. Recognized by many as the "father of modern enzyme kinetics," Professor Cleland was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1985.

I have come back to this book after first digging into it when it first came out. At that time, I got bogged down and never really made it very far into the book. Here's why: A reader needs a basic conceptual familiarity with DDD before tackling this book. I'd suggest Domain-Driven Design: Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software and Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture (Addison-Wesley Signature Series). You might be able to get a running start by reading the free e-book "Domain Driven Design Quickly" ([...] but the Fowler book is particularly helpful, since it catalogs and explains a number of the patterns used in Nilsson's book.Don't assume this book is outdated because it uses NHibernate instead of LINQ or the ADO Entity Framework. If you are a true DDD developer, neither product is quite 'there' yet, and NHibernate remains the best ORM framework available. And if the Entity Framework does become a viable ORM product in Version 2, the skills taught in this book should transfer easily.In short, this book presents a really good nuts-and-bolts approach to explaining how to do DDD, but it assumes you already have a pretty good understanding of what DDD is all about.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Jimmy has a very conversational writing style. He will show some code, talk about the pros and cons, make a change, talk about that change and repeat until he has something he is satisfied with. This was very helpful to me as it demonstrated that he has gone through the same growing process that we all need to take as software developers. He is not lecturing from a tower; he is a common programmer who has be able to develop some excellent techniques through research and experience working with others who also seek to be the best they can. His examples are clear and meaningful. He shows how you can actually use TDD to grow a domain model, which is something that has certainly been lacking from other resources I have used in the past. I read the book because I feel like my dev team needs a better focus and I am now more convinced that DDD and TDD will help us focus on creating maintainable code for our enterprise.

Great read for those conversant in C# and perhaps object-oriented language. Take time to read in-depth to capture this material.

The book provides a massive detailed walk through the construction of the domain-driven framework creation. It is in Jimmy Nilsson's conversational tone and that makes the book very interesting.I do wish there were a few diagrams to tie each chapter together, but that is for the reader to do.

This is really an exellent book on DDD, I read soon after the Evans book and I must admit that is really worth money I spent on it. Sure the book is not for beginners, and it is not an introduction to DDD, I think that a background on the subject is needed to fully appreciate this book.Alk.

Read fowler's and Evan's, the book is very good but it is an extension of books of the two authors. So, to understand it completely it is better to read those before.I have not read the books that this is based but I have enjoyed it a lot.

So far I have just passed half way and I loved every page.I wish I had more time to go through it faster.It is very well explained and the author has a good sense of humor.
